Each pair of meticulously cut wood strips is skillfully hand-bent to form the sides of the Boulder Creek guitar. Once they are coaxed into the optimal shape for acoustic tone and structural integrity, the sides are then placed into the custom shaped and unyielding “keeper”.
A demanding taskmaster, the keeper performs a vital function since wood naturally tends to spring back to its original flat form despite the expert bending and shaping performed by our talented luthiers. The precisely shaped “keeper” plays an essential role in maintaining the bent sides’ proper shape, preventing them from reverting to their original flat configuration.
In the particular instance as shown above, we have a set of solid maple sides being held in the keeper and destined to become a Boulder Creek OM (Orchestra Model) guitar with spruce top.
Take a look how this set of maple sides is mounted securely in the keeper, ready to be paired with a maple back and spruce top. Notice the internal precisely shaped braces and expansion bolts that firmly hold the sides in place, ensuring they maintain their precise shape.
Similarly, here we have a set of rosewood sides safely held in the keeper, with the neck and tail blocks installed. The back is prepared for gluing and will soon join the sides to create an OM Rosewood guitar with a spruce top.
